Lloyd Cole came to prominence in 1984 when his group, Lloyd Cole & The Commotions, had a hit single with their first release, Perfect Skin. This was followed later the same year with the release of their debutalbum,Rattlesnakes, which received a gold disc for sales over 100,000 in the UK. NME included Rattlesnakes in its Top 100 Albums of All Time list, and the album was successful internationally. After touring the world on the back of the album, the Commotions returned to the studio to record their second album, Easy Pieces, which featured the hit singles Brand New Friend, Lost Weekend, and Cut Me Down. The group released a third and final album, Mainstream, in 1987, which featured another three hit singles, My Bag, From The Hip, and Jennifer She Said, followed by another exhaustive world tour, after which the group split up.
Lloyd moved to New York and started working with members of Lou Reed’s band, Robert Quine and Fred Maher, resulting in his eponymously titled debut album in 1990. He has released several successful solo albums since then and regularly tours acoustically internationally. His 2013 album Standards returned to a sound more akin to the Commotions and resulted in live UK BBC television performances (backed by The Leopards) on Later with Jools Holland and the Andrew Marr Show.
Lloyd Cole has just released a new album, Guesswork, which features two former Commotions (Neil Clark and Blair Cowan). The album has an electronic influence throughout and has been extremely well received by critics and fans alike. Lloyd is embarking on a solo acoustic world tour performing songs from throughout his career, from Rattlesnakes through to Guesswork.
